This may be a small thing, but someone pointed out to me they really liked the small analog clock in the center of the dash of a particular car.

Someone else said they hated it, and thought it was stupid to put analog clocks in cars in 2013.

I said that, for whatever reason, an old-fashioned dial clock is often added to an interior to make the car seem more "upscale" or luxurious.

Is this true? Does a clock with hands on it make any difference to you? Or would you just prefer a digital clock?

They certainly look classier than digital clocks to me

They look classier for the same reason that Breitling, Patek Phillipe and Tag Heuer aren't known for their digital watches.

Some might also say, why do we have wood trim interior in 2013, since they invented this new age material called plastic, but again, it's considered a classy touch that harkens back to a different time in auto design.

Also, if you really just want to see the time displayed digitally, it's probably on the nav screen, in the gauge cluster or both.

A luxury feature? No, but some manufacturers do try to market it as such. I agree with SH & QRK that its just meant as a touch of class.

On the internet you can be anything you want.
Its strange that so many people choose to be stupid.

When I think luxury an analog clock doesn't come to mind. I think they can make an interior seem a bit more...special but I wouldn't call them a luxury feature.

It keeps the brand relevant. You can flip it for leather that you see in the top-models of you common car. Because there is leather, is it a luxury car? Having that analog clock, elgin watches, DOES make you feel like you have something special. I think you will see more sales in luxury segment brands, if the manufacturers stop putting leather and the like in the common car segment. It's pretty muddled right now, hello kitty watch, as we all know.

Good point.

To me, digital clocks remind me of when they first appeared . . . the 70's & 80's. So they may be more modern but to me they look more retro.

Definitely a retro touch, but I'd even say it draws from the 30's and 40's. Duesenbergs, Bugattis, etc.

You can make a analog clock out of some high end material, wheres the digital is still a screen. So Yes.

It gives it an old-fashioned look. What if Big Ben were suddenly turned digital? Wouldn't look right, that's for sure, so what if they stuck an analog clock in a Scion? In my opinion, it just adds a nice touch to upscale interiors, like a jewel on a ring.

As of now yes there's something about one that just says luxury to me. It takes more to make a classy analog and incorporate it then it does a digital. It also must cost more to go with a nice analog vs digital.

Now if all of a sudden ever car started offering them then yea it would take that something special touch they have.

Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree,it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. (a.e.)

I dig a really nice analog clock in a luxury automobile. It's a great example of attention to detail, and a throwback to old-world luxury, imo.

IIRC, Chrysler got a lot of attention in ~1999 by reintroducing analog clocks in the 300M.

It had a nice backlight (Indiglo, I think), art deco design and did add a classy touch to the dash as a change from all the digital clocks at the time. Full disclosure - I had a 2000 300M.

This. Almost anything you do to a digital clock will still result in it looking like nothing more than numbers on a screen. An analog clock can be dressed up to look much classier. TypeSH nailed it, designer watches are analog for a reason.

You can have an opinion, just be prepared to be relentlessly mocked for it.
